Walsall College hairdressing lecturer Helen O’Rourke talks us through her Level 3 students creative work.

“As part of the Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing qualification, students are required for Unit 316 Creative Hairdressing Design to produce a creative image incorporating added hair for a fantasy-themed look.

“They must style their model including hair, make-up and clothes to complete the look. They are required to use a variety of creative and practical technical skills and are graded on the degree of difficulty and how these skills are used.

“The student is then required to record the creative hair design using images, then assess their own work and identify opportunities for improvement.

“The students are set a task to source an image that interests them first. They then work on creating a mood board where their ideas and inspirations are collected together.

“They look at colour and design and how they can adapt the sourced image, to work to their creative strengths and the model’s hair.

“The students then work in practical sessions on their mannequins, trying out these creative techniques, and pulling them together to create an image suitable for the theme.

“With tutor guidance and support, they are able to get the best out of the image they choose to create.

“They then need to source a model with suitable hair to reflect the image.

“The students have an insight into what it would be like preparing their chosen model for a catwalk show, it inspires them to be creative and pushes their skill set.

“The students have attended master classes with Francesco’s Michelle Thompson, Afro Hairdresser of the Year, where she took them through her collections and how to prepare for a photo shoot, and make-up master classes with Ravita Pannu makeup artist.

“I am very proud of the work our students have produced this year.”
